Red grapes produce an amazing array of good red wines: from the boldest, heartiest big reds to elegant and structured dry reds to sweet and simple picnic slurpers. So much depends on where the grapes come from and what the winemaker does with them, but the most important factor is the variety of the grape itself.

Red wines

Although the consumption of white wine is booming, red wine is the most widely consumed. There are an incredible number of wineries worldwide divided into regions, countries and continents. In the "Old World" red wines have been produced since time immemorial, starting in the Middle East. In the "New World" the vines were planted by emigrant vintners. The soil, plant/grape treatment and production are also very decisive for the quality and taste of wine.

Good Italian red wine

Italy produces the most wine with the finest wines coming from Piedmont in the north where the Barrolo and Barbera are making a furore. But regions like Sardinia, Sicily, Lombardy, Tuscany, Umbria and Puglia, where the Primitivo comes from, also produce exciting red wines. Not to mention the Veneto region with its unsurpassed Amaretto.

Tasty French red wine

Hungarian red wine

Hungary and the Balkans, for example, are ancient wine countries with their own wine culture and many local grape varieties such as the Kadarka, Kyralyleanyka, Portugieser and Furmint. The famous Bikaver (bull's blood) is a cuveé of multiple grape varieties. Another celebrity is the Tokaji a dessert wine made only in the Tokaj area from the Furmint grape.

Red wine from the Balkans

In the other Balkan countries, wine manufacturing is on the rise. In Moldova, the Salcuta vineyard is a leader, making wines from local grapes (Feteasca Alba, Rara Neagra, Plavai) that are successfully combined with the best European varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, etc.).

But also closer to home in Belgium with the likes of Genoels-Elderen and in Germany with Sven Nieger great wines are made. There are already over 180 vineyards in the Netherlands that make predominantly white wines such as Reeslander.

Red wine from the new world

With Columbus, grapes arrived in the Americas. Argentina and Chile are major producers where vineyards tend to be large and automated. Argentina has famous wine regions like Mendoza and Patagonia where famous wines from Rutini among others, come from.

The U.S. also has great potential for vineyards. California in particular has vineyards where Chardonnay and Merlot run rampant with famous vintages of Opus One. Just across the border in Mexico is Baja California where La Cetto exports great wines. But also in the north in Canada, wine is made by Jackson Triggs.

Also on the other side of the globe, special wines are being made in Australia by Penley Estate and Jim Barry. And among it's neighbors in New Zealand, the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are of special quality.
Finally, the tip of Africa where farmers produce excellent wine in decent quantities in Stellenbosch and the Heaven and Earth Valley.
