Apátsági Pincészet Infusio. Cabernet Franc, Merlot from Pannonhalma, Hungary. The flagship, a blockbuster of a wine, powerhouse, tough, the equivalent of a Supertuscan but from Hungary! Behind the name infusio is an ancient Benedictine tradition. Infusio refers to the wine of the very best quality, which the monks drank only on special occasions. Of particular note is that this wine is only made in the best years. This wine is a full-bodied, yet balanced red wine with a unique character. Sultry aromas of ripe red fruit, vanilla and tobacco emerge on the nose and palate. The wine is composed largely of Merlot and blended with Cabernet Franc. The wines were aged separately in 500-liter barrels for a period of 14 months. Made from merlot and cabernet franc, Abbey Vineyard Pannonhalma’s most prestigious cuvee comes from the hottest vineyard. Ripe blackberry and cranberry appear simultaneously on the nose, complemented by the scent of vanilla coming from the wooden barrels. The balance between extract sweetness, alcohol and ripe tannins results in a smooth taste that evokes the concentrated notes of dried sour cherry and plum, as well as coffee and chocolate. It is a serious and elegant wine with Mediterranean notes and high aging potential.

Cabernet franc is een tamelijk productief ras. Het is in feite de originele cabernet druif. De veel beroemdere cabernet sauvignon is een nakomeling van de cabernet franc. Hij is waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Bordeaux waar hij een van de klassieke componenten is van de Bordeauxwijnen. In de 17e eeuw is hij meegenomen naar de Loirevallei waar hij vervolgens, met succes, werd aangeplant. Cabernet franc houdt van kalkrijke kiezel, zand en kleibodems en rijpt circa tien dagen eerder dan cabernet sauvignon. Hij floreert zeer goed op koelere bodems. Merlot één van de oudste Vitis vinifera-variëteiten die eerder rijpt dan de Carbernet sauvignon en de Cabernet franc. De Merlot is belangrijk in de Bordeaux, vooral in de Saint-Emilion en Pomerol. De aanplant van Merlot is de laatste jaren aanzienlijk gestegen. De druif is wereldwijd zeer populair en men is steeds meer tot het inzicht gekomen dat Merlot in een vrij koele wijngaard moet worden aangeplant. Deze druif geeft donkere, koele, zachte, kruidige en fruitige wijnen.

Merlot plantings have increased significantly in recent years. The grape is very popular worldwide and people are increasingly realizing that Merlot must be planted in a fairly cool vineyard. This grape produces dark, cool, soft, spicy and fruity wines.
