Bodegas Ontanon Kaori Viura from Rioja, Spain. Rich tropical wine with aromas of grapefruit, a subtle undertone of pepper and floral notes that complete the bouquet. The palette is complex with tropical fruits and vanilla. The finish has a nice texture that fills the mouth, but still feels refreshing. This curve of Maturana Blanca and Garnacha Blanca and Viura goes perfectly with sushi and spicy Asian dishes. The Maturana Blanca is a very rare white grape from La Rioja, Spain. The Maturana Blanca is a quality grape. It produces fresh white wines with stimulating citrus acidity, sometimes tropical fruit and spiciness. Although it may be the oldest white grape in La Rioja, it was almost extinct a few years ago. The Maturana Blanca was probably already planted in La Rioja in the seventeenth century; at the time under the name Ribadavia. To this day, you can only find it in the La Rioja wine region. In 2008, only three hectares were planted with it. It was practically extinct. Viura and Malvasia are the common grapes here today. Garnatcha, The most planted blue grape in Spain. Excellent for blending, although the best garnacha wines come from Priorato and are usually a monovarietal there.Garnacha is an important component of traditional rioja (usually up to 30 percent). In France, this grape is used almost exclusively as a varietal with other grape varieties. The Garnacha is a true Mediterranean grape that is addicted to the heat. The grape variety continues to follow the sun, regularly changing its name. The vine is resistant to all kinds of diseases. The grape has a thin skin with little pigment. The grape prefers poor and dry soils with many (pebble) stones. Little tannin and sensitive to oxidation, so this is not a wine to keep. The Garnacha wines are characterized by a very fruity, almost sweet taste in which blackberries, cherry, kirsch, coffee, cocoa, figs and some pepper can be discovered. They contain little acid. Viura sometimes also called macabeo. The high yield and adaptability of this white grape in all conditions make the viura popular. For still white wines, both dry and sweet, but they also make the well-known sparkling Cavas.
Viura once played the role of soothing strain in red Rioja. Regions used to resort to this method when the tannin and acidity proved too high for pleasant consumption.
