Bodegas Ontañón Vino Dulce Marco Fabio Sweet 50 cl. Muscatel from Rioja, Spain. Straw yellow sweet wine. In the nose intense hints of the Muscatel grape, lots of fruit and honey. On the palate very fresh, with a nice balance of sweetness and acidity. Gold medal winner at the ‘2008 Official Wine Challenge of Spain’.

Muscat is probably the oldest wine grape in existence. It was the Greeks and Romans who brought this breed with little disease resistance to the south of France. Muscat is therefore one of the oldest heat-loving grape varieties in Europe. Muscat is sometimes called the bee grape because they love it. The grape also produces table wines and raisins. There are a large number of mutants that have been given special names. The most important are muscat à petit grain, muscat d’alexandrie and muscat ottonel. Muscat is a grape characterized by very low yields. The most striking thing about muscat is that it produces very aromatic wines with a muscat aroma. It is made into pale yellow and sweet dessert wines that are fortified with alcohol to 15-20% (Vins doux naturels). Muscat wines smell of flowers (roses, white flowers and lemongrass), muscat and fruit (grapes, apricot). In France, muscat is found all along the Mediterranean Sea. Muscat is also used in the Rhône in the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise and in Alsace. This grape is planted almost everywhere in the world.

MIK’S TIP

Gastronomy: Dessert. In particular, chocolate mousse pure with raspberry coulis and timuth pepper. Caramelized pears also go well with it
