Firmenich Limestone Welschriesling from Steiermark Austria. Clear golden yellow colour with silver reflections. Beautiful ripe aromas of honey combined with citrus, apple and tropical notes of lychee and hibiscus. Beautiful full body with a powerful structure and mineral undertone. The aftertaste is slightly salty and continues to float nicely in the mouth. Welschriesling: a grape with a reasonable to good quality. Is definitely not related to the German Rhine or real Riesling. It is perhaps understandable why the name was chosen. ‘Welsch’ means ‘foreign’ in German dialects, and because the grape variety is called Welschriesling in Austria, it can be assumed that the grape originated here. (This grape is not grown in Germany) The name is possibly derived from Wallachia in Romania: the Slavic name for Wallachia is Vlaska. The Italians prefer the name Riesling Italico and use the name Riesling Renano for the real Rhine Riesling. Welschriesling produces good wines with a lot of freshness and a fairly spicy and aromatic character, especially in warm regions, but as a wine it does not reach the refinement of a real top-class Riesling. Welschriesling needs more heat than Riesling. It is a reliable producer that can give fairly high yields and with a few exceptions produces wines that are intended to be drunk soon after harvest. They are made in both dry and slightly sweet styles.
