Weingut Peter Dolle Grüner Veltliner from Kamptal, Austria. On the nose, grassy, lively and nicely fruity. Supple and round on the tongue with a spiciness and some pepper. Everyman’s friend in good standing. Grüner Veltliner is the grape of Austria and is also called weiβgipfel there. Grüner veltliner is most commonly planted in the area around Wachau, Krems, Langelois, Falkenstein and Retz. It is a grape that produces slightly pungent, pleasant, dry, fresh, fruity and easy to drink wines, but never top quality wines. Austria still has 3 veltliners with dark skin: roter, brauner and frühroter. The first 2 are only planted in small numbers; Frühroter (the skin is more red than black) is planted slightly more often, usually in the Weinvertel. The acidity is lower than that of the grüner veltliner.
