Girard Winery Old Vine Zinfandel

Girard Winery Old Vine Zinfandel from Napa Valley USA. 18 months barrel aging of which 80% French oak, 20% American and 30% new barrels. This old vine zinfandel is a beautifully balanced product of a unique terroir. Beautifully ripe, black currant and dark plum fruit. The natural spiciness is enhanced by the skillful use of the wooden barrels, which contribute to a nice complexity. This is a velvety, juicy zinfandel that goes with many dishes. The wine is a velvety, “jammy” wine with nicely integrated tannins and balanced acidity. The blend is 85%Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah 4% Mourvedre and 2% Syrah.

Zinfandel is a blue grape of good quality that can give a high yield. Planted primarily in California for red wines, which can range from light and fruity to dark and tannic. The wines from this grape are somewhat similar to those from Bordeaux. Zinfandel is also very suitable for giving some extra strength and color to wines from less good grape varieties. In Apulia (southern Italy) the same grape is probably called Primitivo, this grape produces an intense, dark-colored and very powerful wine with a lot of fruit in its youth. Both dry and sweet versions are made from it.
