Torres Purgatori DO.O. Costers Del Segre. Cariñena, Garnatcha tinto und Syrah aus Katalonien, Spanien. The label of the Torres Purgatori (Purgatory) is a reference to the legend surrounding this wine. In 1770, some stubborn monks had to work a piece of land far from the monastery as penance. The country turned out to produce wonderful wines. But mysteriously, the occasional wine barrel disappeared. The wayward monks declared that the angels took the wine to the afterlife. The wine is a blend of cariñena, garnacha and syrah sourced from DO Costers del Segre. Powerful with black cherry, blueberry, coffee and intense tannins.

Cariñena This variety gives the Rioja mix its color and body. In most traditionally made Riojas it is used as a counterbalance to the light garnacha. In France, the grape is losing more and more ground because the wines have a mediocre name in many respects. A variety that produces robust, balanced wines with a lot of acid. The grapes have thick skins and produce tannic and alcohol-rich wines with an intense color. The grape can deliver high yields (up to 170 hectoliters per hectare) and is known as a producer of mass wines. Yields of more than 70 hectoliters per hectare produce poor wines. A good wine can be created by mixing with Grenache or Syrah. Cariñena Cariñena The grape likes warmth and a dry and light soil. It has little mold resistance. Garnatcha, The most planted blue grape in Spain. Excellent for blending, although the best garnacha wines come from Priorato and are usually a monovarietal there. Garnacha is an important component of traditional rioja (usually up to 30 percent). In France, this grape is used almost exclusively as a varietal with other grape varieties. The Garnacha is a true Mediterranean grape that is addicted to the heat. The grape variety continues to follow the sun, regularly changing its name. The vine is resistant to all kinds of diseases. The grape has a thin skin with little pigment. The grape prefers poor and dry soils with many (pebble) stones. Little tannin and sensitive to oxidation, so this is not a wine to keep. The Garnacha wines are characterized by a very fruity, almost sweet taste in which blackberries, cherry, kirsch, coffee, cocoa, figs and some pepper can be discovered. They contain little acid.

Syrah, a strong blue grape of very high quality. This grape is usually not easy for wine growers, but it is the seasoning for many Côtes du Rhône Villages. Delivers incredibly powerful and complex wines under optimal conditions. Have a high tannin content, without being stiff. The Syrah grape quickly suffers from poor fruit set in cool weather during flowering (coulure) but is not very susceptible to grape diseases such as Oidium.
